LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye which is intended to rectify disorders with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is usually preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This process also picks up astigmatism and additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The operation is performed with the patient awake and alert, but, the person is typically given a mild sedating medication and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage or injury. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications can occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A few of of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, clinical studies have not completely defined long-term complications or damage. The lASIK procedure cannot be reversed.
