LASIK is a form of laser eye operation designed to improve problems with vision. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders. LASIK is commonly preferable to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized scanner and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the procedure also spots astigmatism and also additional problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is done with the person awake and functional, however, the patient is often given a modest sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications can occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not characterized long-term complicating problems. The surgery is irreversible.
