LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye which is intended to correct or at least minimize problems with vision. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism & other problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this information to judge the location and amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is performed with the person awake, all the same, the person is often given a minor sedative and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, clinical studies have not completely determined long-term or permanent complications. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
