LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye operation intended to improve disorders with eyesight. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in eye problems. LASIK is typically preferred to pRK surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This stage of the process also discovers astigmatism and other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to ascertain the amount as well as location of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done while the person is awake and functional, but, the person is usually given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury or damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications can occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, rings around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research studies have not proven long-term damaging complications. The process cannot be reversed.
