LASIK is a type of laser eye operation meant to improve or correct issues with eyesight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is usually preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This stage of the procedure also discovers astigmatism and other deviations in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to determine the amount and location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake and functional, but, the person is typically given a mild sedative and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, some complications could occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more typically reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap that was made during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research studies have not determined long-term complicating problems. The process cannot be reversed.
