LASIK is a form of laser operation to the eye which is intended to improve troubles with sight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the procedure also picks up astigmatism and additional deviations in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to calculate the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is done with the person awake and functional, all the same, the patient is generally given a mild sedating drug and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications may occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A few of of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not defined long-term or permanent complications. The surgery cannot be reversed.
