LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye operation intended to correct issues with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is ordinarily preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This step of the procedure also discovers astigmatism or additional peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to determine the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is done with the patient awake and alert, however, the person is usually given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and disorders with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, scientists have not characterized long-term complicating problems. The procedure cannot be reversed.
