LASIK is a form of laser operation to the eye intended to correct or at least minimize issues with vision. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time to heal completely. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanning device and the cornea is mapped out. This process also spots astigmatism or additional irregularities in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to judge the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is done with the person awake, even so, the patient is typically given a modest sedating drug and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage may occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research has not completely defined long-term damaging complications. The surgery is irreversible.
