LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye which is intended to correct or at least minimize issues with eyesight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanning device and a corneal map is created. This stage of the process also discovers astigmatism or other problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to compute the location as well as the amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is done with the person awake, however, the patient is often given a modest sedating drug and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications could occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A number of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, scientists have not ascertained long-term or permanent complications. The eye surgery can't be reversed.
