LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye which is intended to remedy troubles with vision. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is usually preferable to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This stage of the procedure also detects astigmatism and additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to compute the amount as well as location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and alert, nevertheless, the person is often given a modest sedating drug and anesthetizing eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems might occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. Some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not determined long-term or permanent complications. The surgical procedure can't be reversed.
