LASIK is a form of laser operation to the eye which is intended to cure or improve issues with vision. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less painful and requires less time to heal completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanner and a corneal map is devised. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism & additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to ascertain the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done with the patient awake, all the same, the patient is usually given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications could occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. A number of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, clinical studies have not completely determined long-term damaging complications. The eye surgery cannot be reversed.
