LASIK is a form of laser-guided eye operation designed to correct or at least minimize troubles with sight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK surgery, as it is not as painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This process also detects astigmatism or other problems in the cornea's shape. The operating surgeon uses this data to determine the location and amount of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done with the person awake and alert, nevertheless, the patient is generally given a modest sedating agent and anesthetizing drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications or damage do occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and disorders with the flap created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not characterized long-term or permanent damage. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
