LASIK is a type of laser operation to the eye meant to correct or lessen difficulties with vision. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in eye problems. LASIK is ordinarily preferred to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized sophisticated scanner and it makes a map of the cornea. This step of the process also detects astigmatism and also other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is performed with the patient awake, all the same, the person is often given a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon operates the laser machines, which create all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complications can occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap that was produced during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research studies have not characterized long-term damaging complications. The process can't be reversed.
