LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery which is intended to correct disorders with vision. It is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is typically a preferred alternative to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized scanner and a map of the cornea is made. This step of the procedure also discovers astigmatism & additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this data to determine the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The operation is done while the person is awake, but, the person is often given a modest sedating medication and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, some complications may occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A few of of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and difficulties with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research has not defined long-term complications or damage. The procedure can't be reversed.
