LASIK is a form of laser eye operation intended to improve disorders with vision. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is generally preferred to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for full recovery. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanner and a corneal map is created. This process also picks up astigmatism or other irregularities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this information to judge the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The operation is done with the patient awake and alert, still, the person is typically given a minor sedating drug and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Later, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without inducing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage might occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Just some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap that was created during the operation. Although LASIK technology is getting better rapidly, research has not proven long-term complicating problems. The lASIK procedure cannot be reversed.
