LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery which is intended to fix troubles with eyesight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is much less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the procedure also detects astigmatism and also additional irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this data to find out the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is done while the patient is awake, all the same, the person is often given a minor sedative and anesthetic eye drops. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Subsequently, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems do occur with LASIK or any eye surgeries. A number of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and troubles with the flap that was produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research studies have not defined long-term or permanent complications. The procedure cannot be reversed.
