LASIK is a type of laser eye operation designed to minimize or repair difficulties with vision. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is generally preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This stage of the procedure also discovers astigmatism as well as other peculiarities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to judge the amount and location of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is performed while the person is awake and functional, but, the patient is typically given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing damage or injury. Although usually uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. Some of the more typically reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was created during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, studies have not determined long-term complications or damage. The surgery can't be reversed.
