LASIK is a type of laser eye operation designed to correct troubles with eyesight. The surgery is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs who specialize in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is typically preferable to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is not as painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and it creates a map of the cornea. This process also spots astigmatism & other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The operating surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal tissue to be eliminated during the surgery. The surgery is performed while the patient is awake, nevertheless, the person is often given a minor sedative and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the lasers, which make all of the cutting. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or laser. Then an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage or injury. Although relatively uncommon, damaging complications may occur with LASIK or non laser forms of eye surgeries. A few of of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap that was created during the operation.
