LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery meant to correct or at least minimize disorders with vision. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors who specialize in eye disorders & diseases. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK surgery, as it is less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer driven scanning device and a corneal map is created. This step of the process also picks up astigmatism or additional deviations in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to judge the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the operation. The surgery is carried out with the patient awake and functional, all the same, the person is generally given a modest sedating medication and anesthetic eye drops. The surgeon operates the lasers, which produce all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although relatively uncommon, complications or damage could occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK typically include: infection, light sensitive and dry eyes, over or under correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and issues with the flap made during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research studies have not determined long-term or permanent damage. The surgical procedure cannot be reversed.
