LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye designed to improve or correct troubles with vision. The surgical procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is commonly a preferred alternative to pRK eye surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time to recover. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computer controlled scanner and it creates a map of the cornea. This stage of the process also spots astigmatism & additional peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this information to compute the amount and location of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is done with the person awake and functional, even so, the person is usually given a minor sedating medication and anesthetizing eye drops. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea using a blade or a laser. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, some complications could occur with LASIK or other laser or non laser eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, rings around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, clinical studies have not completely defined long-term complications or damage. The surgical procedure is irreversible.
