LASIK is a type of laser-guided eye surgery meant to cure or improve issues with eyesight. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical physicians who specialize in disorders of the eye. LASIK is generally preferable to photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, as it is less painful and requires less time for healing. Prior to LASIK eye surgery, the patient's corneas are examined with a computerized scanning device and a corneal map is created. This step of the procedure also spots astigmatism and additional problems in the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses this information to ascertain the location and amount of corneal material to be eliminated during the surgery. The operation is performed with the patient awake and functional, however, the person is often given a mild sedating medication and anesthetizing drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Afterwards, an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without causing damage. Although usually uncommon, complicating problems do occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. A number of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK can include: infection, dry eyes and light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, changing vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and issues with the flap that was produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving quickly, clinical studies have not characterized long-term or permanent damage. The process is irreversible.
