LASIK is a form of laser-guided surgery to the eye intended to correct or lessen problems with sight. The surgery is performed by ophthalmologists, who are mDs specializing in eye problems. LASIK is typically preferable to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less pain-producing and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer driven sophisticated scanner and the cornea is mapped out. This step of the process also discovers astigmatism or other irregularities in the shape of the cornea. The eye surgeon uses this data to determine the location as well as the amount of corneal material to be removed during the surgery. The operation is performed while the patient is awake and functional, even so, the person is typically given a minor sedating drug and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The operating surgeon operates the laser machines, which do all of the incisions. A flap is carved in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a blade or laser. Later, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without creating damage. Although usually uncommon, damaging complications might occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Some of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK are: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, changes in vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and troubles with the flap that was made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving very rapidly, research studies have not ascertained long-term complications. The lASIK procedure is irreversible.
