LASIK is a form of laser surgery to the eye which is intended to rectify disorders with sight. It is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders and diseases. LASIK is usually preferred to pRK eye surgery, as it is much less painful and requires less time for fulll healing. Prior to having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are evaluated with a computer controlled sophisticated scanning device and it makes a map of the cornea. This stage of the procedure also picks up astigmatism as well as other problems in the cornea's shape. The eye surgeon uses this data to judge the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done while the patient is awake and alert, all the same, the patient is generally given a minor sedative and anesthetic drops for the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the laser machines, which make all of the cutting. A flap is sliced in the cornea using a laser or a blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without causing injury or damage. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems could occur with LASIK or any form of eye surgeries. A few of of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK are: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and difficulties with the flap made during the operation. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, studies have not completely defined long-term complicating problems. The procedure can't be reversed.
