LASIK is a form of laser-guided operation to the eye designed to improve problems with sight. The operation is performed by ophthalmologists, who are physicians specializing in eye disorders. LASIK is ordinarily a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), as it is less painful and requires less time for full recovery. Prior to LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computerized sophisticated scanning device and it makes a map of the cornea. This procedure also spots astigmatism & other peculiarities in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this information to judge the location and amount of corneal material to be removed during the operation. The surgery is done with the person awake and alert, even so, the person is typically given a modest sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The eye surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the cutting. A flap is cut in the cornea using a laser or blade. And then, an excimer laser is used to remodel the cornea. The laser destroys tissue without creating harm to the eye. Although relatively uncommon, complicating problems may occur with LASIK or any type of eye surgeries. Just a few of the more commonly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, light sensitive or dry eyes, under or over correction, fluctuating vision, halos or starbursts around lights, double vision, and problems with the flap that was produced during the surgery. Although LASIK technology is improving rapidly, research has not completely defined long-term complications or damage. The lASIK procedure can't be reversed.
