LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery which is intended to correct troubles with vision. The operation is carried out by ophthalmologists, who are physicians or MDs specializing in diseases and disorders of the eye. LASIK is commonly preferred to pRK (photorefractive keratectomy), as it is not as painful and requires less time to recover completely. Before having LASIK surgery, the patient's corneas are analyzed with a computer controlled scanning device and a map of the cornea is created. This process also picks up astigmatism and additional deviations in the cornea's shape. The surgeon uses this data to find out the amount as well as location of corneal tissue to be removed during the surgery. The surgery is done with the patient awake and alert, nevertheless, the person is often given a mild sedating agent and anesthetic drops in the eyes. The surgeon operates the lasers, which create all of the incisions. A flap is cut in the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, using a laser or blade. Then an excimer laser remodels the cornea. The laser vaporizes tissue without inducing damage to the eye. Although usually uncommon, complications may occur with LASIK or any method of eye surgeries. Just some of the more regularly reported complications of LASIK include: infection, dry or light sensitive eyes, over or under correction, fluctuations in vision, starbursts or halos around lights, doubled vision, and problems with the flap created during the surgical procedure. Although LASIK technology is getting better quickly, research has not determined long-term damaging complications. The surgery cannot be reversed.
